Students with disabilities enjoy adaptive bicycles at Joseph Stilwell’s Bike Rodeo

April 4, 2023 – For three years running, the Joseph Stilwell Middle School Bike Rodeo has given students with physical and intellectual disabilities the opportunity to enjoy an activity that most take for granted – riding a bicycle.

Organized by school staff, and in partnership with Brooks Rehabilitation, the event allowed students to ride the school track on bicycles specially sized and adjusted to their needs. School leaders say for some students, this event marked their first time ever riding a bicycle.

“Something we really strive to teach a lot of our students is that they can do everything that anybody else can do,” said school Physical Therapist Sarah Schilling. “We’re excited with them. And we’re excited to share that joy of that first experience with them.”

The Bike Rodeo also featured educational activities geared toward teaching students about bike safety and rules of the road.
