Governor’s announcement informs Duval’s safe school reopening plan

June 12, 2020 –  Gov. Ron DeSantis’s June 11 announcement about getting back to school is a key factor in Duval County Public Schools’ plan for the new school year beginning on Aug. 10.

“We anticipated the state would recommend reopening schools and returning to the classroom, and the governor’s announcement enables us to focus on that scenario,” said Superintendent Dr. Diana Greene.

While the governor has signaled the desire to reopen schools, he also shared that school districts have the responsibility of determining how to reopen with appropriate health and safety precautions to mitigate the risk of COVID-19 spread.

“We received great input from our stakeholder groups through the survey,” said Dr. Greene.  “It is important to us to consider the feedback we have received from students, parents and employees in the development of the plan.  We are now working with our school-based leaders, health care partners, and Duval Teachers United — our teachers’ union — to convert all the input into a plan that provides students with the best educational environment with appropriate safety precautions to reduce the likelihood of spreading the virus.”

Duval County Public Schools expects to share more about the protocols, procedures, and educational options for next school year before the July 4th holiday.
