With a focus on phonics, new literacy program is rooted in science of reading

June 13, 2023 – Coming to K-2 students this fall – it’s a new reading curriculum district leaders say teachers are “raving about” and is leading to student success.

It’s called the UFLI Foundations. UFLI stands for the University of Florida Literacy Institute. With this curriculum, teachers focus on teaching students phonics – or sounding out words – so that they have a stronger foundation in both reading and writing.

Sixty elementary schools piloted the program during the 2022-2023 school year. As a result of its success, UFLI Foundations will expand to all K-2 elementary students this fall.
